Andalusia in November, and the math that makes it obvious

The same trip, six weeks later, for about a third less — with the heat and the crowds taken out.

Seville in August is forty-one degrees and I will not be talking about that today. Seville in November is nineteen, gold from about four in the afternoon, and roughly a third cheaper. That is the entire argument, and it took me two trips to believe it.

The route, in the order that works

Seville first, Cádiz second, Granada last. It works in that order because the trains are quick and flat between the first two, and because Granada — the Alhambra, the altitude, the hills — deserves to land when you have found your feet rather than on day one with a suitcase.

  • Seville, four nights. Base yourself in Santa Cruz or just across in Triana. Triana if you want dinner where people actually live.
  • Cádiz, two nights. Ninety minutes by train and a completely different pace — Atlantic, windy, salt on everything.
  • Granada, three nights. Go up to the Alhambra on your second morning, not your first.

Spain’s rail network is the quiet luxury of this trip. I book legs on Omio because it shows train and bus side by side, and on two of these routes the bus is genuinely the better call.

The Alhambra, timed properly

Book the Nasrid Palaces slot the moment tickets open for your month — they are timed, they sell out, and there is no charming workaround. Take the earliest slot available. Not for the light, though the light is better. For the ninety minutes before the tour groups reach the far courtyards.

Every crowded landmark has an hour where it is not crowded. It is almost always the first one.

What nine days actually cost

Flights $612. Nine nights of accommodation $838. Trains $118. Alhambra and two other tickets $96. Food and wine, generously, $430. That is $2,094 for nine days in three cities, and the August version of exactly the same itinerary priced out at just over three thousand when I checked it out of curiosity.

The part I did not expect

Andalusia in November is not a compromise version of Andalusia. Orange trees are heavy, the light is long and low, and dinner at ten at night makes sense because the day did not exhaust you. I sat outside every single evening in a cardigan.

If you have been telling yourself you will go next summer: go six weeks off the summer instead. Same country, better trip, and the money you save is roughly a second trip.
